I have never seen JVP's tv shows but the title of this book attracted me so I decided to read it. It is written in very basic language, and illustrated with many stories from JVP's experiences. It should be easy for anyone to understand. In the book he discusses how the spirits of people who have died will sometimes hang around the Earth instead of moving into the "Light". He gives reasons they sometimes have for staying around; unfinished business, not realizing or accepting that they are dead, fear of crossing over into 'Hell', being too firmly invested in the material world, etc. JVP also discusses the many dimensions of the universe which exist and how the spirits of people who do too much evil on Earth become trapped in lower dimensions (what we think of as "Hell"). The topic of reincarnation is briefly touched on as JVP tells us that spirits tend to reincarnate in "family" groups and therefore we are around the same spirits in human form, century after century during our lives on Earth. Beyond ghosts, JVP also discusses the power of human and spirit thought, and how thoughts help create our world and our reality. Meditation is discussed briefly. There is little discussion of the entity that we call "God" and I wish JVP had shared more of his thoughts or impressions on that subject. At the end JVP shares some techniques regarding getting in touch with the spirit world, and protecting oneself from the influences of negative energy from other humans and spirits. Although I don't believe any one person has all the answers about the workings of the universe, I thought this book for the most part was an interesting, informative read. I think if there is anyone out there struggling with belief that they should read this book and also some books on meditation. There is nothing in my experience like practicing meditation to make one realize that there really is something out there besides the short life we experience on this planet.

As soon as I knew about this book I bought it. I just knew it would be a fabulous read and I was not disappointed. I read it in one sitting. Just couldn't put it down. Thought about sending it to my Mom, but decided to keep it so I can read it again and again. I'll order my mother another one. I'm sure it will bring her comfort like it does me. It's very inspirational to live your life to the fullest and best that you can.

I had a reading by James shortly after my father's death and in that reading he told me that my father was telling me where my mother had been and that he had been with her. I called my mother and told her and she was unable to speak. She had just been to their favorite place in Sedona, AZ with all the fountains and to know dad was there with her brought her to tears she was so happy. James also told me things NO ONE on earth including me could possibly have known. I am still in contact with my father and others who have passed thanks to James validating what I thought was true. Love you James. Keep up your fantabulous work!!

Best book on this subject - has most answers
By Kerry D
This is the absolute best book about ghosts and what happens to us after we are dead. Here's some of the things that I learned from the book:

(1) When we die, our spirit comes out of our body and we retain all of our memories. In spirit-form, we are exactly the same person only without a body.

(2) We in spirit-form choose to either hover around and watch our funerals or go to the light. At death, everyone has either friends, deceased family members, or a spirit guide meet us.

(3) In spirit-form, you can think of a place and immediately be there. This includes another planet.

(4) In spirit-form, you can go to all of the same places you did before you died. For example, you can go to your church and sit in the pews. While your ghost is sitting in the pew, there may be a wedding going on in our reality, but you in spirit-form will only see the sermon from before you died.

(5) In spirit-form you will appear in what ever clothing you want, just from thought.

(6) Your dead relatives can pop in and out of your home, bathroom, work-place, etc whenever they want and see what you're doing.

(7) Dead people read minds. If you think of a dead relative, that dead relative will know it and may come to you if they want. Dead people can read minds so whatever you're thinking about them, they will know it. Example: if you want to know if your dead grandma is OK with you selling her house, you can ask her to give you a sign that it's OK by asking her out loud or just thinking the question. You may have to wait a couple of days but eventually you should see her "OK sign". The example in the book was a license plate that had the dead person's initials and ended in OK.

(8) Your dead relatives can try to contact you by making an object appear somewhere. Example, if your dead son was a rock collector when he was alive, then he could move a rock and place it in your bathroom under a towel. Obviously there wouldn't be a rock in your bathroom normally so when you pick up the towel and see the rock drop to the floor, you should realize that your dead son is telling you he's OK. The rock doesn't just float through your house, it would appear instantaneously.

These are samples of the good information in this book. I recommend it highly.

One more bit of info - Lucille Ball's spirit still visits the studio where she made the Lucille Ball TV show. In spirit-form she told James that she visits the studio because she was always very happy there doing what she loved.

Giving Thanks: The 1621 Harvest Feast, by Kate Waters

Sometime between September 21 and November 9, 1621, the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people shared a harvest celebration that has become known as the First Thanksgiving. This is the story of what happened during those days, as told by dancing Moccasins, a fourteen-year-old Wampanoag boy, and Resolved White, a six-year-old English boy. Photographed in full color at the Plimoth Plantation, this accurate reenactment will let you experience a time when early English colonists settled on the rich and fertile land of the Wampanoag people.

Amazon.com Review
Ever wonder what the real first Thanksgiving was like? In Plimoth, Massachusetts, sometime in the autumn of 1621, English settlers--known as Pilgrims--and the Wampanoag people shared a harvest celebration that eventually became swallowed up in myth and legend. Giving Thanks is a photographic reenactment of what might have taken place, based on true historical accounts. Starring Resolved White, a 6-year-old English boy, and Dancing Moccasins, a 14-year-old Wampanoag youth, this fascinating story alternates between their points of view to paint a picture of life in America during the 17th century. The two boys are cautiously intrigued by each other's cultures as their respective communities come together in peace to celebrate the gifts of the earth. Compelling photographs by Russ Kendall bring the time alive, while brief text by Kate Waters sets the tone and fills in details. Children who have only read about the first Thanksgiving in textbooks will glean a much more authentic understanding of this powerful historical event. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
In the newest addition to their books about children of the 1620s, Kate Waters and Russ Kendall present a reenactment of that first holiday, Giving Thanks: The 1621 Harvest Feast. Photographs taken on Massachusetts' Plimoth Plantation, a glossary and suggested reading list make this a solid resource.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2-6-In this photo-essay, Waters introduces two fictitious characters in order to bring to life events that may have happened around the time of the first Thanksgiving. The story takes place between September 21st and November 9th, 1621, and is told in parallel narratives by a 14-year-old Wampanoag Indian boy, Dancing Moccasins, and a 6-year-old Pilgrim boy named Resolved White. Crisp, full-color photos taken at Plimoth Plantation offer an accurate historical reenactment of the harvest days and celebrations that occurred between the Indians and Pilgrims. Historical notes and descriptions of the living-history museum add the perfect ending to this very informative and simply stated offering. Whether readers are interested in a good story or want to learn more about Colonial America, maybe comparing and contrasting cultures, or are interested in how to get involved in historical reenactments, this offering will be an asset to any social studies curriculum.

An accurate historical perspective on the 1621 Thanksgiving Feast
By A Customer
This book is hard to find now, although I did order one directly from Plimoth Plantation because I loved the copy we checked out at our local library so much.

It's a photographic and textual historical interpretation of the "first Thanksgiving" as seen through the eyes of a native Wampanoag youth and a "pilgrim" colonist boy. I think it's great for grades 1-4.

It does not purport to tell the whole story of colonization in the New World by Europeans coming over on the Mayflower and other ships, but instead sets out to tell the story of the harvest celebration of 1621 and what may have happened between September 21 and November 9 as based on historical documents. It puts to rest the tired old myth of the grateful pilgrims inviting the friendly Indians to feast. The last 4 pages of the book go into more detail. This section is easily skipped over if it's too much for younger kids, but adults or older kids may find some of the specific historical details interesting and informative ("Squanto's" real name was Tisquantum, Lincoln declared a day of thanksgiving on August 6 1863 and another that November). There is information about the ongoing customs of the Wampanoag people, the traditions among the colonists, how the English (colonists) ate, a recipe, and information about Plimoth Plantation and the historical interpreters.

I give it 5 stars.

no more black hats and silver buckles
By Amazon Customer
If you're tired of seeing your children come home from school mid-November wearing those awful construction paper hats and mock indian feather bonnets, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK! (Do the teacher a favor -- buy one for her, and maybe one for your school library, too.) Waters and Kendall have joined together again to explode the myths that currently abound in the land of kid-lit. The dialogue for Resolved (pilgrim) and Dancing Mocasins (Wampanoag) is formal, yet easy to understand, and the accompanying photographs are wonderfully rich and vivid.

"Giving Thanks" - a review
By Visibly Pam
If you are looking for good book to read to young children at Thanksgiving, this isn't it. Not only is it not a good read-aloud, it argues against the traditional telling of the Pilgrims story.

In fact, at the end of the book the author, Kate Waters, talks about how the traditional turkey-pilgrim-indian autumn feast is a mythical occurrence. She says that while historians don't know what `really' happened, it wasn't what the present day holiday conjures up in all of our collective memories.

Instead, what we should know is that European fishermen and traders brought plague that killed whole villages. And that it was just a coincidence that there were any Native Americans at Plimoth (alternate spelling of Plymouth) on the day there was to be a harvest feast, an event that was, in fact, rather a rare occurrence of celebration for the Pilgrims as they did not deem it appropriate celebrate *any* holidays, not even Easter and Christmas. (ho-ho-ho)

Which brings us to the substance of the book when considered for older readers (older tweenies or teenagers perhaps). It is an attractive book to look at. There are pictures of re-enactors in a colonial setting, but it basically centers around a time where all the houses are built and everybody is fat and happy. No Mayflower. No hardship.

And ironically, while the author argues that you won't find the `true' story of life in early colonial times in other books, you won't find it here either because the author's own re-enactors - pilgrams and native americans alike-- are incredibly clean and tidy individuals. Everyone in crisp linen and wool or deerskin. Even the children! LOL

Two Stars. A terrible book for young children. It might hold more interest for older children as the pictures are interesting.
See Amazon's "Search inside this book" feature to judge for yourself.

Example of text:

"I throw the ball but miss the stool broadly. It lands near the feet of an Indian boy who is standing at the edge of the forest. He throws the ball back to me. I know him not but I give him greeting. He answers back in his tongue. I see him surveying our men at arms and the cleared field. I run to tell my friend Bartle, but when we look back, the boy has disappeared into the forest. I wonder why he watches us?

[Note: My children and I suggest you take a look at "The Pilgrim's First Thanksgiving" by Ann McGovern.]

This book put me on the correct path to a job I love.
By Robin
I have an older version of this book. I'd like to take a look at the current version and plan to do so soon. I'm interested in taking another look because I have a friend who's interested in a new career and I thought this series might help him.

This particular book was the one that put me on the path to my career in publishing. I was lost, in and out of college, switching majors every semester, until I had to settle on one or drop out. So, I dropped out and got a "pass-the-time" job. While I was thinking about returning to school, I was browsing in a bookstore one day. Somehow, I found the career/reference section, and found this book, which seemed to be written just for me! I am a bookworm! It brightened my day. It wasn't so in-depth, but perfect for someone who might need to explore several possibilities when they are a lost soul. It let me a most important thing: most careers for bookworms start with an English degree. There I was, found. You may think that's common sense, but not all of us are common-sensical. Secondly, even working in a bookstore can get you places, if you want to move on. I got a job at a bookstore, I knew someone there with an internship at a publisher, she suggested I apply for an internship there, and I did. I now work there! Never underestimate the power of the book. Even one that looks like a quick read.

Many wonderful career ideas for bookworms
By Patrice Fagnant-macarthur
As a dedicated bookworm, how could I resist checking this book out? Authors Marjorie Eberts and Margaret Gisler provide an astounding number of careers that might appeal to those who love to read, from the expected, such as a librarian or book reviewer, to ones people might not ever have considered, such as becoming an indexer or doing government research. They also include interviews with various individuals about how they got their jobs and how they find them interesting. If you are a bookworm, there is certain to be a job (most likely more than one!) in here that will appeal to you! It would be a great book to give to a young person who loves to read, but is unsure what to do with his or her life.

Meh - useful but not earth-shattering
By N. Johnson
This book was pretty good, gives you a good idea of what it's like to work in literary careers such as publishing, what education/experience is necessary to get your foot in the door, and what the path up the ladder can be like. However, it didn't deliver any non-obvious suggestions for potential career paths. I did not have any "WOW, I never thought of being a ---" moments.

Red Sparrow: A Novel, by Jason Matthews

In the tradition of John le Carré, the bestselling, impossible-to-put-down, espionage thriller that is “a primer in twenty-first century spying” (The New York Times Book Review), written with the insider detail that only a veteran CIA operative could know—and shortlisted for an Edgar Award.

State intelligence officer Dominika Egorova struggles to survive in the cast-iron bureaucracy of post-Soviet intelligence. Drafted against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the service, Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a first-tour CIA officer who handles the CIA’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception, and, inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s most valuable mole in Moscow. Seeking revenge against her soulless masters, Dominika begins a fateful double life, recruited by the CIA to ferret out a high-level traitor in Washington; hunt down a Russian illegal buried deep in the US military and, against all odds, to return to Moscow as the new-generation penetration of Putin’s intelligence service. Dominika and Nathaniel’s impossible love affair and twisted spy game come to a deadly conclusion in the shocking climax of this electrifying, up-to-the minute spy thriller.

Taking place in today’s Russia, still ruled with an iron fist by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Red Sparrow displays author Jason Matthews’s insider knowledge of espionage, counter-espionage, surveillance tradecraft, recruiting spies, interrogation, and intelligence gathering. As The Washington Post hails, this is a “sublime and sophisticated debut…a first-rate novel as noteworthy for its superior style as for its gripping depiction of a secretive world.”

The spy-thriller is back in full force thanks to newcomer and CIA insider Jason Matthews.

Set in unnervingly accurate present-day Russia, where Putin’s influence is omnipresent, Red Sparrow follows two intelligence officers who are targeted against each other: Nate Nash, a young, ambitious, sometimes naive CIA officer, and Dominika Egorova, a willful, beautiful Russian ballerina turned spy due to unfortunate circumstances. When we first meet Nate he is beginning the most important job of his fledgling career—handling MARBLE, a high-ranking Russian intelligence officer who is giving information to the Americans, largely considered to be the CIA’s most valuable asset—while Dominika’s first foray in the field is off to a more tenuous start. After being injured and thus forced to leave her beloved ballet, her uncle, a high ranking state intelligence official lures her in, eventually forcing her to attend “Sparrow School” to train as an espionage courtesan. After successfully finishing her training, Dominika is sent to Helsinki where the young Nate has taken up residence after a near disaster in Moscow. The Russians had discovered that he was gaining inside information, tipping them off to the existence of a high-level mole. Dominika is charged with the task of discovering the mole’s identity by getting close to Nash—a delectable honey trap for the brash American. What begins as a relatively simple assignment leads to a development of fatal double lives, dangerous spy games, and treacherous secrets. As the two face-off, tentatively making moves, Dominika begins to learn the true nature of those who control her, and suddenly Nate and the people he works for begin to look more and more attractive. Disappointed and humiliated by her handlers, and with nowhere to turn, Dominika is recruited by Nate (or is she?). Against the rules, the two fall in and out of bed in various cities, and come close to falling dangerously in love. They struggle mightily to trust each other, and to trust themselves.

I read till 11 and woke up at 5 a.m. three days in a row to finish this book as fast as I possibly could. If it doesn't supplant The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as the next mammoth read, and if it doesn't take its place alongside le Carre's The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, the love of literature and jaw-dropping thrills really is dead. When I finished the book the day was just dawning, as it always is in this novel, only in the novel the fated characters, filled with melancholy, romance, venom, and belly-aching humor (this book can be laugh out loud funny), are usually eating well and wondering when it'll be lights out for them. Jason Matthews has "reported" this book for 30 years, working it all out in the "real world," and one wonders who he is, mostly: the young, "naive" Nate Nash; the knock-out, petulant heroine Dominika, whom Quentin Tarantino and Doctor Zhivago both might've loved; or the Gus Grissom-like Gable, a CIA chief who dispenses life-lessons to the young Nate—a muscled hen clucking and stirring a bubbling sauce over a stove. There is not a false note in the amazing ventriloquisms that are the conjurer's art we call literature. There are sentences as exciting to read as Eliot's "The Wasteland" (cf. the description of a moist, pale toadie scuttling along a hall; downright spooky, an image I cannot get rid of); or the majestic, floor-board creaking opening of Cormac McCarthy's All The Pretty Horses. The granular sweep of the authorial vision is a telescope still warm from Tolstoy's hands. There's a scene in here better by ten than Bogart looking down at Ingrid. I learned as much about the former Soviets and the new Russians, and our U.S. of A., as I have ever gleaned from the hardest working journalists writing today. Halfway through, I was afraid Vladimir Putin would find out I was reading Red Sparrow and have me arrested. With its ripped-from-the headlines appeal, real life spy craft details, and thrilling international action that takes us to Helsinki, Moscow, Athens, Rome, and Washington, D.C., I have to say that I have not read a more exciting, gripping novel in a long time. And the best part is this: the ending of this novel makes it clear that this isn’t the last we’ll be hearing from Jason Matthews.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Many spy novelists, including Ian Fleming and John le Carré, actually worked as intelligence agents. Add to that list Jason Matthews, whose 33 years as a CIA field operative enriches his first novel with startling verisimilitude, from griping about meddling, deskbound bureaucrats at Langley to the flat statement that Russia’s SVR, successor to the KGB, sees the Cold War as alive and well, and that in Putin’s Russia, “nothing has changed since Stalin.” Perhaps this is novelistic license, but it feels genuine. That sense of authenticity, along with vividly drawn characters, much detail about tradecraft, and an appropriately convoluted plot that centers on moles in both the SVR and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence make this a compelling and propulsive tale of spy-versus-spy. Matthews’ characters are variously fascinating, eccentric, and truly odious, including a beautiful Russian woman with the gift of synesthesia, forced into “sparrow school” to learn espionage through seduction; a brilliant and flamboyantly odd head of CIA counterintelligence; a “poisonous” dwarf whose reveries always return to torture and murder during Russia’s Afghanistan debacle; and many more. Locales including Moscow, Helsinki, Rome, and Athens seem knowingly evoked, and each brief chapter concludes with a recipe for some food a character has just eaten. Red Sparrow is greater than the sum of its fine parts. Espionage aficionados will love this one. --Thomas Gaughan

Review
"Jason Matthews, who became an authority on the Kremlin during his 33 years as a CIA operations officer, has written an espionage novel, Red Sparrow, in which Putin makes a cameo -- read it and you too may conclude that no one on the planet knows the Russian president better. You too may also conclude that Red Sparrow is the best espionage novel you've ever read." (Keith Thomson Huffington Post)

“Veteran CIA operative-turned-novelist Matthews keeps the trouble popping in Red Sparrow, but relentless drama is just one of the high points of this sublime and sophisticated debut… Red Sparrow isn’t just a fast-paced thriller — it’s a first-rate novel as noteworthy for its superior style as for its gripping depiction of a secretive world. While many former CIA agents and MI6 operatives have turned to writing fiction in retirement, Matthews joins a select few who seem as strong at their second careers as at their first.” (Art Taylor The Washington Post)

"A primer in 21st-century spying. Matthews' former foes in Moscow will be choking on their blinis when they read how much has been revealed about their tradecraft...terrifically good." (The New York Times Book Review)

"A smart, intriguing tale rooted in his own experience...Fans of the genre's masters including John Le Carre and Ian Fleming will happily embrace Matthews' central spy." (USA Today)

"This debut novel from a 33-year CIA veteran delivers action as pulse-pounding as it is authentic." (New York Post)

“Matthews’s exceptional first novel will please fans of classic spy fiction…The author’s 33-year career in the CIA allows him to showcase all the tradecraft and authenticity that readers in this genre demand…[a] complex, high-stakes plot.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“The author, a veteran CIA field agent, liberally salts his thriller with realistic tradecraft, horrific villainy, and stunning plot twists as the opponents vie for control…An intense descent into a vortex of carnal passion, career brutality, and smart tradecraft, this thriller evokes the great Cold War era of espionage…Readers of bloodthirsty spy and suspense will welcome this debut from a writer who supersizes his spies.” (Library Journal, starred review)

“Many spy novelists, including Ian Fleming and John le Carré, actually worked as intelligence agents. Add to that list Jason Matthews, whose 33 years as a CIA field operative enriches his first novel with startling verisimilitude…That sense of authenticity, along with vividly drawn characters, much detail about tradecraft, and an appropriately convoluted plot make this a compelling and propulsive tale of spy-versus-spy…Red Sparrow is greater than the sum of its fine parts. Espionage aficionados will love this one.” (Booklist, starred review)

“Matthews’ first novel, a globe-trotting spy thriller, features enough action to satisfy even the most demanding of adrenaline junkies…The author’s CIA background and the smart dialogue make this an entertaining tale for spy-novel enthusiasts.” (Kirkus)

"Not since the good old days of the Cold War has a classic spy thriller like Red Sparrow come along. Jason Matthews is not making it up; he has lived this life and this story, and it shows on every page. High-level espionage, pulse-pounding danger, sex, double agents and double crosses. What more can any reader want?" (Nelson DeMille)

“A great and dangerous spy-game is being played today between Russian intelligence and the CIA. Very few people know about it, including many of our politicians in Washington. But Jason Matthews does, and his thrilling Red Sparrow takes us deep inside this treacherous world. He’s an insider’s insider. He knows the secrets. And he is also a masterful story-teller. I loved this book and could not put it down. Neither will you.” (Vince Flynn)

“I read till eleven and woke up at five a.m. to finish this book. "All the tradecraft and cat-and-mouse tension of a classic spy thriller— a terrific read." (Joseph Kanon author of Istanbul)

4 1/2 Stars -- Definitely Worth Reading But You'll Need To Be Patient With It!
By bobbewig
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and the publisher in return for an honest review, which follows.

I am an avid reader of thrillers and am particularly a fan of espionage thrillers. So, I figured that Red Sparrow would be "right up my alley." However, the book's slow pace during the first hundred pages kept me undecided as to whether I was liking it or not. This is because it took me awhile to get used to the fact that Red Sparrow wasn't going to be a book filled with lots of physical action -- e.g., fist fights, gun fights, killings, dramatic car chases, etc.-- that I've come to expect from books of this type.

Soon after, however, I realized that Red Sparrow is an espionage thriller that is several notches above the typical book in this genre. It is filled with many fully dimensional, credible characters and location descriptions that make you feel that you are there experiencing all of the deceptions, schemes, and double crosses involving the various CIA and Russian intelligence agents and politicians --some of whom are moles for both sides. Further, it becomes quickly obvious that first-time author and former CIA operative, Jason Matthews, really knows his subject matter, as Red Sparrow is filled with an abundance of information about the inner workings within both the U.S. and Russian intelligence organizations that is not only interesting, it serves to create an atmosphere that keeps the reader shaking his/her head in wonder.

As if this isn't enough to entice you to read Red Sparrow, perhaps the following facts will convince you to do so: (1) two of its main characters, CIA agent Nathaniel Nash and Russian agent Dominika Egorova, will stay in your mind long after finishing the book, and will have you looking forward to the author writing at least one more book featuring them to find out what the future holds for them; and (2) its plot is filled with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing as to what happens next, and an ending by which you will most likely be very surprised.

Highly recommended to those thriller readers willing to be patient enough to finish a book that will ultimately make them consider Red Sparrow to be among the better thrillers they are likely to read this year.

top-shelf emotional rollercoaster
By Daniel Stuelpnagel
This book will hold you in its grip. Jason Matthews rivals the masters of the genre, I cannot remember ever being so riveted by the characters in a spy story as they get pulled deeper into a terrifying series of concentric events.

The twists leading up to the most magnificent turn, which is a pivotal yet deceptively simple idea that unfolds throughout the third act, are elegantly choreographed, yet while reading I wasn't thinking about technical or structural expertise, just totally immersed in the story, which deftly shifts back and forth between the humanity of the characters, the incessant tradecraft and counterespionage, and the intense and shocking violence inherent in the most crucial of conspiracies, with huge stakes and an ever-expanding web of motivated operatives.

It's all there, travel to dozens of exotic locations around the world, taste the food, see the sights, witness the exchange of violence and deception between intelligence services, and get completely wrapped up in the astounding love story embedded in the midst of ruthless treachery and radical choices that leave the participants in the spy game a dwindling set of unpalatable options.

Hero and heroine are put to the test time and again, it was all I could do not to read the whole book in one sitting, I finished the final eighty pages at eight in the morning and can't wait for time to pass so I can read it again.

The women in this story erupt from the pages in fully-realized passionate motivation to take charge of engineering intricate plots, there is often a freakish, scary, next-level psychopathic killer waiting around the corner, unpredictable and plausible in the extreme.

Beautifully written, yet the author lets his expertise yield to the control of the characters, the book takes on its own life, the artistry and humility of a lifetime career in the service of national security enable him to deliver the goods without making himself visible.

An organic and seductive story with relentless intrigue, immensely compelling characters and a multi-faceted heroine that will break your heart as you yearn for more.

A must-read--even if you're not an avid reader of spy thrillers
By Greg M.
Red Sparrow is a phenomenal read. Before this novel, I'd never read a proper spy thriller in the vein of John LeCarre, but I know now what I've been missing. The plot is intricate--but not too intricate that you ever feel lost, and its turns and fully-developed characters inevitably plant movie-quality images in your head as you read. (After a heated auction, the eventual film will be in the hands of the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Schindler's List, Moneyball, and Gangs of New York.) There's plenty of spycraft, thanks to Matthews' 33 years in the CIA, and not a single double-cross, brush pass, or canary trap feels inauthentic. Highly, highly recommended.

Review
"A great feature of this dictionary is the appendix of commonly used hanja (Chinese characters) in Korean. If you know some Chinese or Japanese, this is an excellent way to identify loan words in Korean you can more easily remember by associating them with the original character." —Goodreads

Very good dictionary, with photos and pictures as well as hanja
By Amazon Customer
Excellent dictionary, although its sizes makes it a bit large to carry around. It has lots of great illustrations and photographs that are useful. An added bonus that was not in the description is that it includes the hanja (Chinese characters) for many (but not all) Korean phrases that originate from Chinese. The hanja is particularly useful for me as it helps me understand the meaning of the phrases in both languages, and understand the etymological roots of the words.

Think pronunciation not Romanization
By John Armstrong
I'm a Korean language learner and I've been using Kyubyong Park's Tuttle Learner's Korean-English Dictionary for about six months now. I really like it, and am constantly looking things up in it and generally poking around in it.

As the title indicates it is a learner's dictionary. The number of entries is intentionally limited and focused on common vocabulary. If you go beyond whatever textbook you are using and begin to take on Korean as it is actually written and spoken you are bound to encounter words and expressions that you can't find in this dictionary, and at some point you will have to get a more comprehensive one.

But what this dictionary may lack in coverage it more than makes up for with other information that is of great value to the learner. The most valuable feature of all, I think, are the example sentences. Every entry has at least one example, and many have two or three, illustrating different meanings or special usages. Moreover the examples are full sentences (as opposed to phrases) with sentence final verb endings in all of the four common speech styles (not just the polite that tends to dominate introductory texts but also intimate, plain and formal), and very often internal verbs as well in the so-called infinitive form (looks same as intimate) or with embedding and connecting particles. The copula is also very well represented. All examples are translated directly but naturally into English to show the meanings not merely of the individual words but also the structures ("patterns") they appear in, including a full range of tense and modal forms. (For example you will see examples of the colloquial ending -(eu)llae(yo) meaning `(I) want to' or `do (you) want to?' which, chances are, you will not see in your textbook.)

This is great, but the really nice thing is that the individual words in the examples are just about all in the dictionary, so that you can look up the words you don't know or aren't sure of and produce your own full "parses" in which every word has its meaning and role. The dictionary also includes endings and particles, so you can find them too. I've gotten into the habit of trying my best to fully understand the examples of any word I'm looking up (or that I just stumble on that seems interesting), and I'm finding that over time it gets easier and easier and I that understand more and more of the words and constructions on first look.

Another very valuable feature of the dictionary is that it shows you how every word is pronounced, not only in isolation but in context in the example sentences. This goes not only for the head words but all the words in the sentence. This is extremely useful because the pronunciation of Korean words, though largely predictable from the spelling (if you know enough), is not always so, and may also vary depending on what elements a word precedes or follows in a particular context.

The way the dictionary shows pronunciation is through the Romanization that has been since 2000 standard in South Korea. The declared purpose of this standard Romanization is to help foreigners see how Korean is pronounced (once they learn the basic conventions of the system), and it is very well suited for this. The dictionary uses it for this exact purpose in a highly consistent and accurate way. Once you get used to it you will see that having Romanizations for the head words and the examples is the next best thing to having recordings of all the items made by speakers of standard Korean. If you have a teacher who pays attention to pronunciation and corrects mistakes, or if you have opportunities to converse with native Korean speakers and have a good ear for language, you may not need the help the book gives you. But there are clearly many people learning Korean on their own who I think can really benefit from it.

Most Korean learners want to learn Hangeul, and many see Romanization as a crutch that they would be better off without and wish they didn't have to look at. This is understandable, but it misses the important point that Hangeul, while it generally represents the sounds of Korean, does not do so exactly, and chooses to hide (i.e. not indicate) a number of important changes that words (or rather roots and prefixes and suffixes, the building blocks of words) undergo in proximity to other elements. Hangeul is about spelling, and that is a different thing from pronunciation. Just because someone can recognize a Korean word as written in Hangeul does not automatically mean that they know how to pronounce it (at least not correctly).

Here's an example from the page 1 of the dictionary. I'll use Latin letters but Imagine you're looking at Hangeul. You see jeoneun + achime + iljjik + ireonayo. The given translation is `I wake up early in the morning' and is probably perfectly clear to you. (You may well know all four words.) But do you know how the sentence is pronounced? The book shows you in the Romanized version: jeoneun achime iljjing nireonayo. I'm guessing most beginners (and maybe also some intermediate learners) would not have guessed it right. What's happening is that an -n- is "magically" appearing between the final -k of iljjik and the initial i- of ireonayo and turning the k into ng. You may say, oh, that's just nasalization, and at some level you're right. Every beginner will encounter simple forms of it, for example hanguk + mal `Korean speech' pronounced hangungmal, maybe iss + ni `is ?' pronounced inni, and possibly sip+yuk `16' pronounced simnyuk, but I doubt most people will know every place it happens, whether in saying words themselves or understanding them when others say them, and I think everyone will benefit from seeing and taking note of it in pronunciations such as appear in the dictionary. Hangeul is not going to help them, they won't see it there. Hangeul represents spelling, not pronunciation.

Nasalization is just one case of Korean pronunciation that is not reflected in Hangeul. Another - and probably the most pervasive of all - is the strengthening of consonants after other consonants. Suppose you see a list of verbs in Hangeul, including sal+da `live', an+da `hold' and dam+da `put'. All three are dictionary forms. Are they all pronounced the same? No. The first is salda with weak (voiced) ending, while the second and third are antta and damtta with strengthened ending. Strengthening or lack of it is partly predictable but not close to completely, and to know whether a given word or phrase has it or not you really need to see (or hear) the pronunciation. The author pays special attention to this feature, and as a result the dictionary is a great source of information about it. This includes both the head words and the examples. (There are a number of other cases, but I think these two are the most important.)

If you accept - as I think you really must - that the real role of the Romanization in the Tuttle Beginners Korean-English Dictionary is to show pronunciation, both for head words and for example sentences, then there can be no question as to its value to the learner. It does not compete with or distract from the Hangeul (which is always given), it supplements it. The one challenge which proponents of a Hangeul only format can fairly make is, why use Romanization for the pronunciations, why not use Hangeul?

In fact, the author does show pronunciations of head words in Hangeul as well as Romanization, and in so doing confirms that Hangeul can be used for this purpose. (This is done by giving non-standard spellings that correspond directly to the pronunciations.) If it were only the head words that he wanted to show pronunciations for, then, yes, you could eliminate the Romanization and have a Hangeul only book. But the fact is that Korean pronunciation diverges from spelling most often where words and their building blocks are strung together, and the place where you see this is in the example sentences. You could in theory replace the Romanizations of the example sentences with Hangeul representations that conveyed the same pronunciation information, but in practice this would result in two mostly identical Hangeul versions of the sentences, differing only where spelling and pronunciation diverged. Would people read both? Presented with twice as much Hangeul as there is actual content, would they even read one of the versions? I don't think so. Maybe a system of selective Hangeul-within-Hangeul annotations would work, but somebody needs to show me. In the meantime, I believe that the existing format is very effective (once you appreciate its intention and value), and should be kept as is.

All in all then I really like the way Kyubyong Park's dictionary is put together. I have suggestions for possible improvements, but they are pretty minor. The first is to have a single main entry for each particle or ending that has multiple forms and reduce variants to simple cross-references to the main entry. (Most are items that vary depending on whether what they are attached to ends in a consonant or a vowel.) The second is to create a simple way of referring to the "infinitive" form of a verb or adjective and use it instead of -a/-eo/-yeo which is uses up space and is kind of tedious.

But those are small things. Overall I am completely satisfied with the dictionary and use it constantly. I recommend it to all learners and give it a solid 5.

Tuttle Learner's Korean-English Dictionary
By A reader
A very useful dictionary that is perfect for any level of the Korean language one is at. In the beginning the book gives an overview on how to write each hangul symbol and how to put them together. What is also a plus for this book is that this book also provides the Chinese characters that some Korean words are derived from. What is also good about this book is that for every word that is listed, it has a sentence with it and some words will provide notes for a better understanding. The only this I wish would be different would be that I would prefer the hangul before the romanization other than that a great book for any learners' collection. ^_^
