About the Author
Colin Gee was born on 18th May 1957 in Haslar Naval Hospital, Gosport, UK, spending the first two years of his life at the naval base in Malta. At the age of 3 he went to live with his grandparents, who brought him up. In 1975 he joined the Fire Brigade and retired in 2007, having achived the rank of Sub-Officer, Watch Commander. After 32 years in the Fire Service reality suddenly hit and Colin found himself in need of a proper job! Colin is now in full-time employment within the NHS. At this moment in time Colin has two daughters, one step-daughter, two step-sons and five grandchildren. In 1992 Colin joined the magistracy, having wandered in from the street to ask how someone becomes a beak, and left in 2005. The experience taught him the true difference between justice and the law, the former being what he would have preferred to administer. Red Gambit was researched initially over ten years ago but work and life changes prevented it from blossoming. Now it has become five books instead of one, as more research is done and more lines of writing open themselves up. Colin writes for the pleasure it brings him and hopefully the reader. The books are not intended to be modern day 'Wuthering Heights' or 'War and Peace'. They contain a story which Colin thinks is worth the telling and to which task he set his inexperienced hand. This must not be the end

There are two underlying conditions on which any story of alternative history or science fiction should be judged: given a "what if" that the author is permitted to assume, two questions must be adequately answered: is the story plausible and is it authentic?

The author here scores highly on both questions. He knows his history, he knows his order of battle, he knows the geography and deployments of the time, not to mention the politics. He expresses the thinking of the time in the attitudes of the men and women caught in the web of his story. He weaves them all together to create a spell-binding story of a sudden preemptive strike by the Soviets after the end of World War II. It a terrific and exciting start of an all too horrifying "what might have been." It is a wide panoramic chessboard, seen from the eyes of the Soviet controllers in Moscow as well as their subordinate forces, and the eyes of the unwitting, not yet demobilized forces of the Western Allies (soon, in our time, to be transformed into NATO).

The author creates an impressive novel worth of any "dead tree" publisher of how this dilemma might have been approached by the Soviets, given their apparent assumption that such a confrontation, some day, in some way, was inevitable, and how the disjointed, not yet organized Western Allied Forces, might have responded.

Great story with only one obvious flaw: [SPOILER ALERT] serious lack of ending. Note to author: "Outstanding. Please advise as to the status of the future stories in this series.

Probably the best-researched alternate history written to date.

This is probably some of the best researched, detailed, and organized alternate history that I have ever read. Also, the author has a deep familiarity not only with Soviet and Allied command climate and military culture, but also military doctrine. In spite of such excellent command of the details, he doesn't lose track of character development. Indeed, his characters - on both sides - felt very real. As a veteran with a masters in military history, I have no doubt after reading this installment that the author has an exhaustive, encyclopedic, knowledge of World War II - from orders of battle to individual commanders. The author - unlike many in the genre - captures Clausewitz' "friction" of war also, with many surprises, intel failures, and fog of war to go around on both sides. Typographical errors were minor and did not generally detract from the flow of the writing. I look forward to reading the next volume.

Highly plausible "what if" tale of World War Three.

This volume is the first in an ongoing series of very well written alternate histories of "World War Three," that are riveting and highly plausible. As a qualifier here: the 4 stars simply reflect my dissatisfaction with the tiny scale of the included maps which I found almost impossible to read without getting a magnifier.

The present work certainly utilizes quite a bit of factual information re: the French scooping up the remains of the Waffen SS for use in Indochina against the Viet Minh insurgents. Refer to "The Devil's Guard," for details.

I found the characters to be well developed in this book, especially Standartenfuehrer Knocke, Major Marion Crisp, and Major John Ramsey. Many of the lower ranks are also well developed, but they seemingly don't last long in the context of the story line. But...there are lots of characters introduced along the way who manage to live long enough to make it into later volumes; a listing of "dramatis personae" would be appropriate in order to simply keep track of everyone.

The story itself really is the heart of the matter, and the provocations perceived by the Russians (Soviet Union) were probably there, but only in the mind of Stalin and Beria. It was this paranoia of the Soviet leadership which led to the hostilities described. There are some features that I perceived to be a bit implausible, such as the ability of the Soviet submarine force to be effective using recently captured German U-boats, but it makes a great plot segment anyway.

Overall, an excellent effort from a new author; I fully intend to read the entire series. (I've already read the first 3 books). As I commented earlier, the 4 stars only reflect the map scale, and not the story line which is excellent and worthy of 5 stars as a stand-alone. Recommended.

So happy to have read this short story. It was great having to revisit the world of the Gardella series. To find out what happened after the last book. It was a great read, of course too brief but very well written. I highly recommend!!

I really enjoyed this short read. It was great to read what gender the babies were and really an opening for more of the venators. And really I am very sad this series is over with. I know she wrote another one with a descendant of Victoria but I just don't think it will compare. I so loved this series. I have to say it's part of my top 5 favorites. I hope to read more about Victoria,max, and Sebastian. And what happens to Sebastian once his task is done? Does he fall for this Marcy? So all right I might wanna read that one too. I guess I really wanted it to work for Victoria and Sebastian. Team Sebastian. Lol

Disappointing Telling of a Great Story.

In the interest of full disclosure I write this review as an insider at Commodore from just after the launch of the C64 through the purchase of Amiga, after which I rejoined Jack Tramiel ("Jack") and other Commodore veterans at Atari Corp. Needless to say I bought this book with great anticipation. It is a disappointment.

The book should have been titled "A Biography of Chuck Peddle and Stuff" but I suspect that would not have sold well. Commodore was Jack. Further, for American audiences Commodore was the C64 and, to a lesser extent, the VIC20. Despite this fact, the vast majority of the book's focus is on Chuck Peddle and the PET. Even though the second edition of this book was published in 2010 and Jack did not die until 2012, the author appears to have never interviewed him.

The core problem appears to have been that Bagnall actually interviewed only a handful or two of the players. Thus we get huge amounts of detail from the perspectives of relatively few players (some admittedly central to the Commodore story) but most no longer active at Commodore during the VIC20/C64 years, the years of greatest interest to the audience for a book on pre-Amiga Commodore.

Examples of the scattershot approach of failing to interview more broadly are legion but I will give an illustrative example. Bagnell clearly interviewed the engineer, Bill Herd, extensively and dedicates pages to him. However, Bill joined Commodore in 1983, well after the VIC20 and C64. His work was on projects that barely saw the light of day (how many had a Plus/4?) and that were supplanted by the real Commodore successor to the C64, the Amiga. It was designed by the engineers at Amiga. At the same time, the author never even interviewed Shiraz Shivji, who, with his team, was the first to propose to Jack that Commodore make a personal computer and who headed the systems engineering team for the C64.

In it's favor is a wealth of detail on the engineering history and certain of the players, particularly for the PET years.

The saddest part is that the book fails to bring Commodore to life. Here was a company defined by a bigger-than-life Jack Tramiel and surrounded by a fascinating cast of characters yet the book fails to convey the color and feel of being a part of it. So many hilarious and fascinating anecdotes are left out that could have given a sense of the place.

A far better telling of the crucial period at Commodore can be found in Mike Tomcyzk's "The Home Computer Wars" which, though perhaps too narrow, properly focuses the attention on Jack Tramiel and is filled with revealing anecdotes. The truly great history of Commodore remains to be written.

A terrific read: educational, fascinating and frequently hilarious

Let me state plainly up front that I was a Commodore Kid: a happy owner of both a 64 and an Amiga. So there is a certain nostalgia kick I might have received while reading this book that other people might not get to the same degree. But I actually don't think it's particularly important to have been familiar with Commodore's products to appreciate this book. The first half of it serves more as a highly illuminating journey into those crazily fast-moving times in the second half of the 1970s, when the industry went from being a few companies selling mail-order, solder-it-yourself boards with a CPU and eight LEDs to a brave new world of self-contained home computers no more than five years later. No industry has ever become so important so quickly, and Chuck Peddle, MOS and Commodore were at the very heart of it.

Peddle is the figure who appears most frequently in the text, and the book at times takes on some of his irritation at the rewriting of history by Apple at the expense of Commodore. The chippiness is amusing at times, but, in truth, it's justified. I was there, even if as a kid, and I remember how hugely important Commodore were in those days. Apple were a relatively minor player with their expensive machines. The Macintosh was the first thing of any real significance they did, building on the Xerox PARC ideas and seeing (correctly) that GUIs were the way forward. But it was Commodore who brought home computing to the masses (along with Sinclair in the UK, a company whose significance I was happy to see this book acknowledge).

This is really terrific stuff if you want to get a good idea of how we got from there to here. Even the very Commodore-centric stuff speaks volumes about the way the commercial landscape was changing constantly in a general sense, and how a project that could seem a good idea when initiated could end up as a dud because the market had moved on in the meantime. There are some mindblowing "What if...?" moments where one can see how a chance moment or a seemingly-random decision can have an enormous knock-on effect when viewed in retrospect. (Particularly fascinating is the story of how VisiCalc became an Apple rather than a PET product by pure chance, and the ghastly moment where Bob Russell realizes that a tiny engineering blunder is going to ruin his disk drive plans and result in loading times 30 times longer than designed, and that nothing can be done about it.)

There are fascinating and enthralling vignettes as well: the story of William Shatner's association with Commodore (and how Commodore computers ended up with cameos in many of his movies), and a truly terrifying tangential recollection of the disastrous airplane flight that nearly killed several of Commodore's top people including founder Jack Tramiel.

There are a few criticisms I could make - in places the book feels like the editing was rushed and could do with a second pass - but it would be churlish to dwell on them. Giving the book five stars is a no-brainer for me, because I enjoyed every minute of it. And it felt really *important* to me that this story was being told. Although author Brian Bagnall must at some level be doing this for financial recompense, I sense that more than anything else this was a real labor of love for him. And it is one that I appreciate greatly: I'd like to say "thank you" for putting all the work in to tell such a rich and interesting story about some genuinely important but undersung heroes of the home computer revolution.

Oh, and I *really* want to read Volume 2 about the Amiga now...

Great Read For Fans of Vintage Computing

Whether you ever owned a Commodore computer or not, this book is must read for any fan of vintage personal computing. The personalities involved and the trials they face are colorful and fascinating and the text itself is well written and engaging to read. I haven't finished it yet, but am really enjoying this alternate perspective on the dawn of the personal computer. A Very in depth look at the birth of the 6502 with frequent walk-ins featuring Gates, Jobs and all the big names from that time. If you lived through those times, this will be a welcome trip down memory lane and will fill in more details that you never even knew you didn't know. If you didn't, sit back and enjoy. Either way, you'll never see those old machines the same way again!

It's Magic!

Back in the 1950s when I was a kid, my father bought me a Heathkit crystal set that I had to assemble myself. I enjoyed the assembly, but couldn't believe it would work because there was no power source: No batteries, no cord to a wall outlet, no transformer. You just strung one long piece of wire for an antenna and a second wire for a ground and you were done.

When I plugged in the earphones, I was mesmerized. It was magical! I could hear radio broadcasts! We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area then and I spent countless nights drifting off to sleep listening to the Giants baseball team.

Since my retirement, I've rekindled my interest in crystal radios and this book has made the magic reappear for me: I've used it over the past several years to build several crystal sets, each special in its own way. And every time I look at the book, I refine my understanding just a little bit more.

I need to make several additional points:

1) The title (Radios That Work For Free) is a clever description of the final product: once you've completed one of the crystal sets, they work for free. That is, they capture energy from the radio waves that are all around us and use that energy to create an audible signal. As I say, no power other than the waves themselves. How cool is that?

2) The instructions are clear and, viewed simply as a set of recipes, the book stands as well worth the purchase. But Radios That Work for Free is much more: it explains in simple terms the conceptual underpinnings of what each part of the radio system does (AM transmitter, the radio waves it produces, the antenna, the coil, the capacitor, the diode and the earphones).

If you understand how each of these elements works, you will be well on your way to understanding the conceptual framework of radio receivers.

3) In the sense of 2) above, crystal radios are primitive. And by building one and listening to it you will become immersed in a kind of history that few experience.

Think about it: There was a time about a century ago when crystal sets were cutting-edge technology. The people who listened to sets of this kind were able to touch the future and wonder at the present. To me, there is a certain romance in experiencing the same kind of magic as our forebearers did: these sets are no less marvelous today than they were when they first appeared. Perhaps they are more impressive.

4) The book and its projects is a wonderful way to introduce youngsters to science. How many of us have had science projects that "almost/should have" worked but didn't quite? The crystal sets here will work if built as instructed. Period.

5) For a parent, the book and the instructions it provides a wonderful way to collaborate with a child in building something that will work. The memories for both child and parent will last a lifetime.

If you have any interest at all in basic science; if you want a project to enjoy with your child; if you want the thrill of experiencing a little magic first-hand; if you are an incurable romantic who wants to experience what the ancients of the early 20th C did — then buy the book.

Innoculated by a Diode

This review of “Radios that Work for Free” is a slam-dunk because, for anyone that does not already know, it is common knowledge by everyone in the hobby of building crystal radios that “Radios that Work for Free” is far and away the very best book ever published comprising the start-to-finish radio theory; circuit suggestions, explanations, and tricks; photographs, diagrams and lists; details and explanations of components; suggested, practical, construction projects; motivational excitement; and everything else one needs to know in order to build and operate a crystal radio set, and to well know just exactly how and why a crystal radio and many other radios work.

As a Boy Scout in the 1950s, I built and rebuilt crystal radios and fox-hole radios over 25 years before this book was published because, somewhere along the way, I had been inoculated by a diode, and I can assure you my crystal-radio experience would have had many fewer hard knocks had I had K. E. Edwards’ “Radios that Work for Free” in hand before I started. With the start in learning radio theory afforded by having built and rebuilt crystal radios, I later built tube and then transistor radios, and, in August 1976, passed the Federal Communication Commission license examination for the issuance to me of ham radio station license and operator callsign of WB5YJN, which I still have.

Nevertheless, I also noticed and bought “Radios that Work for Free” in the early 1980s, and one of my sons and I built the most simple crystal radio K. E. Edwards’ shows, on page 4, in “Radios that Work for Free.” That crystal radio worked great and, consequently, my son also had been inoculated by a diode. Next, he had to have a science fair project at his school and decided he would build the Third Crystal Set Project, detailed on page 108 of “Radios that Work for Free,” which happened to be a short-wave crystal radio! Yes, a short-wave crystal radio. I had never built a short-wave crystal radio and I explained to him that about all I could do would be to show up and help him grunt. He followed Chapter 17 in “Radios that Work for Free” and without any problem had a working short-wave crystal radio set that received the BBC, Radio Moscow, Radio Havana, the Voice of America, Radio Nederland, Deutsche Welle Radio, and others. You owe it to yourself to build this short wave crystal radio just for the fun of it and to keep it by your bed just for even more fun listening to it work for free.

Even if you mistakenly think the Internet has completely replaced radio, or even if you are an Extra Class ham-radio operator, or even if your hobby is collecting only original orchestral soundtrack movie music composed by giants the likes of John Williams, James Horner, Bill Conti, Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, and others, then do yourself a big favor, buy K. E. Edwards’ “Radios that Work for Free,” and build just the crystal radio set shown on page 4. I guarandamntee you that you too will be inoculated by a diode!

This book will definitely show you how to make a crystal radio, but I thought it was light on explaining the theory. Another book that does a much better job explaining the theory and showing you how to build the components from scratch is The Voice of The Crystal by H. Peter Friedrichs. Buy that book instead. Cover and contents of Friedrichs' book are shown in photos.

About the Author

Joseph Gilbert is an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He co-teaches a required MBA course in Law, Regulation and Ethics. He earned a doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Southern California with a concentration in Business Strategy.
