About the Author

JAY SOKOLOVSKY is Professor and Director of Anthropology at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. Sokolovsky specializes in cross-cultural, comparative gerontology and has written several books, as well as more than 30 articles and book chapters, dealing with this subject. In his research he has studied aging in a Mexican peasant village, New York's inner-city, Tampa, Florida, the new town of Columbia, Maryland, and in urban neighborhoods in Croatia and England. He has edited Growing Old in Different Societies and is coauthor of Old Men of the Bowery. Sokolovsky is cofounder and former President of the Association of Anthropology and Gerontology, former President of the Association of Anthropology and Gerontology, and Founder of the International Commission on Aging of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences.

I'm reviewing based on having read about a dozen of the articles in this book, which is a wonderful compendium of work on issues related to aging in cultures around the world. I highly recommend this as an introductory text to anyone interested in the subject.

exciting and far-reaching collection on aging across cultures

This third edition of Jay Sokolovsky's classic "The Cultural Context of Aging" offers rich, readable, engrossing and fascinating essays by leading anthropologists and other scholars studying aging world-wide. The collection includes longer essays and smaller inserted "boxes" meant to grab students' and readers' attention, as well as very useful editorial introductions. The volume also includes up-to-date and provocative information on contemporary demographic shifts around the globe. This is a must-have for anthropologists, sociologists and gerontologists interested in aging and an extremely useful volume for teaching. I plan to use it in my upcoming Anthropology of Aging course.

The Module You've Been Waiting For!

This is a fantastic adventure for fist level characters!
The PCs can really get drawn in by getting to know the townspeople they help out, and eventually become their only hope!
Plot twists abound! Keeping the story line quite interesting for a prewritten adventure that's "on rails." A wonderful dungeon(s) crawl setting!

As a PC, I wouldn't recommend playing a cavalier. As the entire meat of the module is indoors or underground. And that would really limit this class's mount. (unless you're a small PC on a wolf or something, have at!)

As a GM, be ready to look up some of the stats of the more basic monsters (this is common, so no reason to complain of a prewritten adventure). And they're all available free online too!

Also, the experience given doesn't *quite* add up to where it expects you to level. (Even doing a fair amount of the optional stuff leaves you hanging at times) So I'd recommend using the chart giving the recommended levels for various parts of the module as the way to advance your party.

Overall a great time is to be had with everyone involved with this adventure! Running it again starting this weekend!

A nice module to run player characters through it takes a lot of the work out so the game master can just concentrate on running a good story. I highly recommend this product especially for beginners it lays out everything and it is a good starter module

Looks good so far, have not played through it with our group yet. I haven't read through the full adventure yet, but it looks like a good mini-campaign for people just getting into Pathfinder compared to the complexity and vastness of the adventure path's like Rise of the Runelords.

The recipes are absolutely horrible

I really wanted to love this book, (I love Vega products, and I do like the nutritional information presented in this book), but the 12-week meal plan was the biggest reason I bought it and I'm completely disappointed by the recipes. Brendan prefaces the recipe section by admitting they were created for nutritional value, not taste (which is completely accurate), but they don't even work. The past 2 mornings I've tried two of his pancake recipes and not only do they taste disgusting, they're simply uncookable. I've doubled the cooking time, turned up the heat, tried even baking the batter in the oven for an hour and it won't turn into anything. My dog even spits out these recipes. I can't go on cooking from this book. I'm going to take the expensive new ingredients I've bought and find ways to incorporate them into other vegan recipes.

My experience, in detail :)

I've been doing this diet for 2.5 weeks now. I feel great, there's certainly enough food in a day to keep me full (sometimes I can't eat it all). But here are my problems: 1. The base ingredients are rather expensive. Even though they will last for quite a while, getting started was costly.
2. It's very time consuming to make the dishes. I do the recovery drink and only have a little while to get into making the protein drink. And then it's time for the next thing, and the next.
3. It's messy. Fruits and veggies, ok-you expect some rinds and juices and so forth. But all the other stuff (hemp protein, flax seed, carob powder, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.) are all ground very fine to a powder or at best just slightly chunky. It easily gets all over the place. I'm not a slob. It's just messy.
4. This is just part of the deal and not really a valid "issue", but I pee A LOT. And I have gas A LOT. It's apparent why, given the foods, but just thought I'd throw that out there in case someone wants to know :D

I feel healthy. As soon as I'm done with my workout I eat about 5-7 dates and a bunch of water on my way home. I then make a recovery drink. *I NEVER FEEL SORE OR STIFF!!* I was doing the cold baths, which suck, and after reading Brendan's book I know now they also tax my body's energy by trying to stay warm and then warm up again. Making your body more alkaline quickly is way better-you eat and take care of lactic acids at the same time. I'm sticking with vegan raw. Whether you like processed foods, meat, dairy, etc... we all want more consistent energy and mood. Great for training. I put on 35 lbs of muscle mass with Brendan's guidance, eating plant-based. Kale, quinoa, smoothies, avocados, eating 4-5 meals a day, over 50% raw, over 50% green... yes! Love it! Pro-active approach... turns the body into a fat burning, muscle building machine. Paired with proper exercise... results are astounding. Stories with a purpose that is trusted

Anthony de Mello's books generally fall into three groups - guided meditations; cross-cultural, interreligious, traditional teaching tales; and sayings of the Master in context. This book falls into the second category - traditional teaching tales. Fr. de Mello has categorized the stories into seven chapters: spirituality, education, authority, human nature, relationships, service and enlightment. Most of the stories are told without any "editorial" comments i.e. the author trusts the power of story. The selection is excellent coming from a wide variety of traditions and ages, including modern jokes such as "where do you plug it in?" when faced with a piano.
You can read the book straight through and get a lot of laughs or you can read it as intended, pondering the stories and risking having your life changed. The latter is the intend of the author.

Irresistible Stories for Life

Anthony DeMello is a master of story telling. Here are more than two hundred of his stories belonging to various cultures, countries and centuries. They are classified under seven heads of Spirituality, Education, Authority, Human Nature, Relationships, Service and Enlightenment. The author takes credit for only stringing them together. They are highly thought provoking and illuminating. Nobody can resist a story and sometimes a story can change one's life.
Anthony DeMello was one of the great spiritual masters of our time. He was a Catholic priest of the Jesuit order, hailing from India. He died in New York on June 2nd, 1987. He has left behind a body of literature, which will continue to influence the world profoundly in the years to come.

To begin, this is the companion to "Taking Flight" ++filled with Marvelous, possibly Life-Changing Stories. In India, these are called "The Prayer of the Frog" Volumes 1 and 2.

Good information, poor execution.

This book has a fair amount of very useful information in it, with only a bit too much reliance on jargon and buzzwords. It is probably a useful text for learning the basics of psychotherapy.

The problem is, it's poorly written. There are far too many typos of the sort found on page 15, "...(arising from a rejecting an (rather than AND) impoverished primary caregiver-child relationship)." Or on page 46, "...the provision of effective therapy is likely to increase as individual countries and the world becomes (rather than become) increasingly global and multicultural." Or page 49, "This section will briefly introduce, strategic, structural, and solution-focused theories..." (There should be no comma after "introduce".) Or in the table on page 62, "cathart" is not a word, so cannot be used as the verb form of "catharsis". Or page 73, "...highlighting the and general themes..." (Either the word "specific" has been left out, or the word "and" is superfluous.) Or on page 109, where the non-word "self-depreciating" is used rather than the word "self-deprecating", which is clearly what was intended. Or on page 162, "Our ability to choose a response creates and our freedom." (I'm not entirely sure what was intended here, which makes it one of the most egregious errors; it may be that the word "and" was simply superfluous, or it may be that a secondary verb in addition to "creates" was omitted, or it may be that a secondary direct object in addition to "our freedom" was omitted. There's just no telling.) Or, back to simple grammatical errors, on page 176, we have "Several tool..." rather than "tools". On page 182, we have "...several change strategies may applied..." rather than BE applied. And on page 185, "...consider asking the person you are attracted to do something with you..." rather than "attracted to, to do something...". And on page 210 (in table 9.4) we have "...relationships in the client's life maybe latent signs..." rather than "MAY BE". Spanning pages 222 and 223, we have "Sometimes social contact cannot be avoided. For example, a client successfully treated for chronic cannot be avoided. For example, a client successfully treated for chronic anxiety symptoms took a position in the hospital where the therapist worked." On page 231, we have "As clients are better able to relax deliberately, they are able to relax more selectively and more quickly in stressful and competitive." (The word "situations", presumably, was omitted.) On page 251 we have "...that result in their feeling a lack social support..." (The word "of" is omitted.) On page 291, in table 12.5, we have "Repeated sets of conscious lateral eye movements (like those sleep)." (The word "in" is omitted.) On page 292, we have "Approximately one-third to one-half of the population will or has experienced a panic attack..." (Rather than "will experience or has experienced".) On page 309, we have "One of the tenants of 12-step fellowships..." (A "tenant" is a person renting an apartment. A "tenet" is the word we're looking for here.) On page 336, we have "Their brains and bodies are vulnerable to stress so they are urgently need to develop and strengthen..." Not entirely sure what was intended here, but I think it was simply a case of the word "are" being superfluous.) Some of these errors are more critical than others; any one or two of them might have been overlooked. But the sheer volume of sloppiness here wouldn't even be acceptable in a mass-market paperback; in a $50 textbook, it's just unforgivable.
