Another copy for my library. I bought this book so I would have a newer copy, as my original paperback that I bought years ago was underlined and worn. A basic book on The Spear of Destiny and less known history related to the Nazis and World War II. Necessary to have if one is into these topics.

Arden Shakespeare Hamlet

I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden

The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

The best there is!

Kerry Back's textbook on asset pricing elegantly covers two PhD. level courses in asset pricing theory. It contains portfolio choice theory, equilibrium and derivative pricing in both discrete and continuous time models. Back never loses focus on developing intuition drawing analogies between discrete time and continuous time models while keeping the coverage rigorous and complete. Only the most pedantic theorist would ask for a more technical coverage - this book makes Duffie's treatment of this beautiful subject seem intentionally obtuse. The final chapters covering alternative preferences (habit, long-run risk, non-vNM), while quite current with the literature, feel somewhat rushed. Even still, the chapters on asymmetric information and production models are second to none.

Note: This book would not be especially useful for a financial engineering student since it does not cover numerical methods or complex pricing models for derivatives or the term structure of interest rates.

Probably the best PhD level Asset Pricing book out there.

I am in the EDHEC PhD program, and we are using this book, instead of Merton's ConTimeFin, or Cochrane for our course Continuous Time Financial Economics.

Kerry Back's clarity is the main utility here. He does spend a *lot* of time on the binomial model (discrete time) before extending it to ConTime, but this grounding helps in the intuition.

Probably the best pedagogic layout of Ito's formula I've ever encountered, and this thoroughly covers Black Scholes, and asset pricing through Heleyete Geman's final extension.

Back's work benefits from all previous work in computational and continuous time finance in that more (not all) of the mathematical notation is standardized.

However, some of his choices for superscripts and subscripts strike you as odd, particularly if you've come from an MSF that emphasizes, say, John Hull's notation (most), or an MSFE (Carnagie Mellon) that emphasizes Merton's notation. Those coming to a PhD in Finance from Engineering or pure or applied Math will face a new, but slope familiar curve with comprehending the notation.

So the admonition in Financial Mathematics that you really have to pay attention to the author's sometimes idiosyncratic choices for mathematical notation remains, but Kerry Back has (to his credit) extensively used that which is agreed upon or in general consensus in this volume, so it is in fact easier to read (n relationship to other books) than say, Merton or Oksendal.

And so here a word on difficulty. This is not Oksendal. This is not Shreve and Karatzas. Those would be more appropriate for a PhD in Financial Mathematics, not a PhD in Finance.

So why four stars instead of five?

Typos, really. Kerr Back has the errata sheet on his website, but still...for a premium priced book the copy editing was supposed to be better than this. It isn't HORRIBLE (like, completely unedited, like some publishers ( "Wiley" )) but you'd expect better from Oxford University Press. And the errata sheet doesn't correct just minor stuff, some key items can throw the first-time-in-the-subject-reader way off on a useless tangent, wasting time and creating initial confusion. So get that errata sheet (the publisher should actually include it with the volume...my copy did not have it).

So in short, this is a great, clear, readable, and understandable Finance PhD level treatment of asset pricing that is a good choice for a variety of courses on continuous time asset pricing and financial economics. With the errata sheet and your hand made corrections, it is an excellent book. It is too light for a Financial Mathematics PhD, but a solid basic or supplemental text.

I'm over these IR books in which the Black woman is always "thick." Every Black woman is not big boned. It irritates me. Anyway, the story is pretty good and I didn't find myself rolling my eyes. Both characters were likeable and the plot was well developed.

Great symbol identification and clue following

This is a very unique Carle book. Your child can learn more about shapes and how to follow clues to lead to the next step. My daughter enjoyed reading the story and following the "clues" to the next shape to find the present at the end - a puppy.

If you take the story literally as an adult, you will agree with one of the reviewers that was upset a puppy was being stored in a cave/basement. But it's not meant to be taken literally. It's a fantastical journey for children. To this day, my daughter enjoys following the trail to the present waiting for her at the end.

As a previous K teacher, both my students and I have always loved this book. Eric Carle is a master, not only with his vivid, eye-catching illustrations, but also in knowing exactly what would appeal to a child. Having a birthday, waking up to a secret message, being led through all the clues including small cut-outs in the pages, to discover the surprise gift - totally enchanting for a child. Finding the puppy at the end, especially for dog-lovers, has got to be the ultimate gift. After retiring, this is one book I could not give away. Highly recommended.
