Manly P. Hall keeps a high standard.

This short book is filled with unpretentious wisdom, as typically shaped by Mr Hall. Neither astrology nor reincarnation are presently on top of my list of curiosities, which means that I haven't read too much on the subject. Having said that, this book gives insights that seem very precise, and adds a way of thinking about the zodiac signs that I hadn't read anywhere before.

Disappointing

In the previous book Noelle discovers that Tristan is engaged to the beautiful Isabelle and despite his efforts at trying to explain that the engagement was his fathers doing, more of a business deal in fact she won't listen, she's beside herself, she feels betrayed and upset beyond anything she could ever have imagined. I was with her all the way, to find out that the man you're falling in love with is engaged to another woman, I can't begin to imagine how she felt but then I could also empathise with Tristan, at this point we don't have all his family history but we know his relationship with his father is strained and that his father is not a nice man, so imagine how Tristan must feel, yes he should have told Noelle but he was also caught in a bad place.
Despite the editing mistakes, on one occasion even the wrong name was used, anyway despite this I was settling into this well and looking forward to their journey but Noelle started to annoy me, more than she had in the previous books, and I was struggling to continue on, but continued on I did and then it all kind of went to pieces, Tristan had a couple of stupid moments and Noelle (doormat) Travis became even more annoying and I wondered why I'd bothered, this series started so well but ultimately it came down to irritating characters and a predictable plot.

You won't want to put this one down..

Love this series and am so gonna miss reading about these charachters.. I love the passion Noelle and Tristan felt for each other.. I never once started any books in this series and put it down without finishing the whole thing in one sitting (my idea of an awesome read!! "If you can't put it down..It is considered awesome" ) .. This is a very entertaining and heartfelt romance .. I would love to see a spinoff about Larene ..I loved her protectivness and dedication to Noelle.. You will love this series and make sure you have at least an hour to read when you start because you won't want to put it down..

Oh soooo deliciously good!

This is just the kind of story I always wanted--simple, no profanities , a little bit of angst, just enough to get the story flowing. There's a bit of drama and lots of honest-to-goodness hot sex, I mean hot! The characters are so diverse, so convincing you could see them in everyday walks of day to day living.

I'd consider myself blessed to have a best friend like Larene, who's there to hold your hand while you cry your heart out, who's there to eat and binge on chocolate cookies and ice cream with you, calories be damned! And iI'll absolutely consider myself ncredibly lucky to have a boyfriend like Tristan Blake, who not only a billionaire but hot as hell-fire sinfully handsome, but also knows how to truly show good times and romance a woman. Oh yeah, talk about wine and dine you in private entire floor, overlooking a breathtaking view of the entire city, from the top floor of an exclusive sought after restaurant...who takes you in a private jet and flies you to London and Scotland just to make up for his errant ways. Sure, Noelle suffered some heartaches but who hasn't? I have had my share of heartbreak but no one jetsetted me to UK,(not just yet!) let alone in a private jet. If that happens to me, call the paramedics please! Swoon! ;)

I like Noelle, she's smart, she's beautiful and level headed. I admire the way she handled all the conflicts and dealt the heartrending news and Tristan's fury directed at her. Somebody has gotten engage...and somebody leaked out the sensational Tristan's family secret and scandal to the media...what a tangle and mess they weave! A hold-your-breath moments aplenty. Tristan and Noelle's relationship is never smooth, it's one step forward and two steps back. Oh, but it's all worth it, had I not waited for the complete series to be available before I started to read it, I really don't know how I would have handled it. I probably would be sporting smooth hairless head by now from pulling my hair. Those can't wait for the next book to find out what happens next can drive you to madness. But then again...it's all so worth it! Read this, guaranteed to treat you to a most absorbing, emotional at times, sexy as hell read. My first of Ms.Emilia Winters and it wouldn't be the last, well written and I highly recommend it. ❤

Learn to write properly

With the greatest of respect for Alif Baa and Mastering Arabic mentioned in the reviews below, neither teachs you good Arabic handwriting, and both also concern themselves with pronunciation and grammar. Writing Arabic, by contrast, concerns itself wholly with the Ruq'a script, the script most Arabs use for their everyday handwriting. The reviewers are right in saying that some knowledge of the Arabic script would be helpful (no, neccessary) before approaching this book - you need the ability to make out ordinary Arabic print (i.e. the calligraphic Naskh script) - and the reader should use this book in conjunction with another book on the Arabic language. However, for the serious student of Arabic, I can't recommend strongly enough the use of this book as soon as you know the alphabet. You'll also learn to read other people's handwriting - no easy thing.

Oh, don't be put off by the 1950's typewritten English script - unlike the other books on offer, no printed Arabic appears in this book, just good handwriting. The others show a little scrappy Naskh script (an extraordinarily difficult script to write properly) and print the rest. The aim of Writing Arabic is to teach you to write Arabic clearly.

[Note Summer 2005: a new book has come out that may be a more user-friendly way of learning good handwriting: Jane Wightwick and Mahmoud Gaafar's "Mastering Arabic Script" (not to be confused with the authors' "Mastering Arabic"), which also teaches ruq'a. I've not seen it yet, though. JL]

Excellently achieves its purpose.

If you want to learn how to write Arabic so that your handwriting would even fool an Arab, there is absolutely no better book available. Most other Arabic language books teach only naskh script, which is the Arabic equivalent of block printing and looks juvenile in handwriting. The few books that actually do deal with ruqah script don't really teach the student how to develop good penmanship. Anbody seriously interested in learning to write Arabic as it is written in the modern world cannot ignore this book.

Really Invaluable

If you've been developing your Arabic handwriting by imitating the printed script used in textbooks and other printed material, you're pretty much wasting your time. The 'Naskh' script is not used by Arabs in handwriting and attempts to imitate it only end up looking amateurish.

Mitchell's book is the only really good introduction into both the handwritten and calligraphic 'Ruq'ah' scripts that I know of. It has a very systematic approach, and comprehensive and thorough coverage which makes it relatively easy to locate specific details-- but since the individual sections are interdependent the student will have to work iteratively through the material front-to-back a number of times until it is completely mastered.

As alluded to in a number of reviews, this book is definitely 'old school'. It is a reproduction of a typewritten and handwritten manuscript, has a pretty high 'information density' (so the book itself is correspondigly deceptively small), and is unforgiving in its use of technical terminology, demanding focused attention from the reader.

Just to reiterate a point made by another reviewer, this book bears no relationship to Alif Baa at all. Alif Baa is a grammar tutorial that does not go into handwriting at all-- and vice versa, Mitchell's book presupposes quite some basic knowledge of Arabic orthography. In any case I'm surprised that someone would recommend Alif Baa under any circumstances, as that suffers, in my opinion, from a great many defects.

If you are used to modern typeset textbooks with four-color graphics, sidebars, and elaborate formatting, you may be disappointed by 'Writing Arabic'. If, however, you can take this book on its own terms, you should find it a valuable and reliable resource.

When she fell pregnant in London in 1938, Jean knew that she couldn't keep her baby. The unmarried daughter of an elder in the Church of Scotland, she would shame her family if she returned to the north in such a condition. Scared and alone in a city on the brink of war, she begged the Foundling Hospital to give her baby the start in life that she could not.

The institution, which had been providing care for deserted infants since the eighteenth century, allowed Jean to nurse her son for nine weeks, leaving her heartbroken when the time came to let him go.

But little Tom knew nothing of her love as he grew up in the Foundling Hospital - which, during years of the Second World War, was more like a prison than a children's home. Locked in and subject to public canings and the sadistic whims of the older boys, there was no one to give him a hug, no one to wipe away his tears.

A true story of desertion and neglect, this is also a moving account of survival from one of the very last foundlings. It stands as a testament to the love that ultimately led a family back together.

About the Author
Tom H. Mackenzie was one of the last children to be taken in by the Foundling Hospital after 200 years of institutional care. Following a spell in the army, he has worked in journalism and business and now writes a weekly column for the Plymouth Herald.

Something about this book

This is a very well written account of one persons life from birth to being passed into the childcare system then on to foster care and not being able to see or even know who his real mother was. It's not a system that is still in place today and it worked very well. Not the kindest place to be but better than a lot of the alternatives. He does finally find his birth mother but it's the journey that makes the story.
The system used in the UK is different from what is used in the US so it might be of value and interest to give it a read. It is so wonderfully written that you find yourself wanting to know more and more. Not a particularly long book but certainly an entertaining one and a look back into the past.
Maybe I'm just old but I loved reading it. I highly recommend this book and I highly commend Mr. Mackenzie for writing it.

Excellent story.

Very well written story of life at The Foundling Hospital where I was raised 4 years earlier, Tom Mackenzie did in no way exaggerate, he wrote from his heart and I whilst I found it most interesting, I believe non foundlings will be shocked at the treatment foundlings had to suffer. A very good read...

Excellent book - very well written - engaging true story

This was a great book written by a man in his 70's about the hardships he endured being raised in the late 30's-40's as an orphan when his unwed mother had to make the very difficult decision to give him up temporarily shortly after his birth until she could be reunited with his father. The chapters are divided between Tom's story and that of his mother, Jean, who never gave up hope of being reunited with her beloved son.

This precious little boy was initially raised by a loving foster mother until the age of 5 when he was taken to be raised in a very strict institution with other children. The children were provided for with food, lodging, clothing, and religious instruction, but were denied love and affection. The author details the things that were later learned by those in charge about how traumatic and difficult that sort of environment is on a child and how it affects them long-term. Children need more than the bare necessities -- they need love, affection, comfort, and mothering -- not a cold, sterile environment full of endless rules and regiment.

While little Tom yearned for the love of his mother, he was fortunate to come into contact with a few individuals during his childhood who showed him kindness and love. He goes on to talk about his struggles away from the institution from his teen years to adult when he gets a job in the work place and then joins the service, and how he was finally reunited with his mother, father, and other family members when he was 20 years old. The epilogue tells a little more of the story.

This book was very well written and engaging. Thank you Mr. Mackenzie for sharing your story.

A True Gem

Public Schools, Public Menace by Joel Turtel is a gem. Written from an educational policy analyst's perspective, this book opens the readers' eyes of how the current public school system deceives parents, cripples the students' reading ability and drugs behavior-challenged students by justifying their actions with the so-called various psychiatric disorders.

Divided into two parts and nine long chapters, this book is more than an advanced analytical piece. It is a guidebook for all parents and educators who place the students' interest above their own. It also includes 22 danger signals from children, which can be easily spotted among today's students.

In the second part, Turtel provides realistic solution to concerned parents in providing a great, low-cost education without being chained in the public school system. He includes a long list of high-quality respectable resources that would help parents achieve this goal.

Contrary to popular belief, American public school system is not the best in the world. Author Joel Turtel showed it to us courageously, so we can make the necessary changes and improvements.[]

This book is hard-hitting and packs a punch

Author Joel Turtel thoroughly educates readers about the condition of public schools in this country. This book is hard-hitting and packs a punch. Yet, the author has been careful to research his facts, and includes extensive footnotes and a bibliography.

Educating our nation's children is everyone's concern. Future leaders are sitting in classrooms today, and it's imperative that they receive a quality education. However, a close inspection of our schools reveals a disturbing and sometimes diabolical condition. From curriculum to corrective measures, the author clearly shows that the nation's education system is not deserving of a passing grade.

This book is divided into two parts, with the first section dealing with the abuses found in today's classrooms. Each chapter slowly and systematically sorts through the facts and fallacies, until readers get a true sense of the education system. The author backs up his opinions with solid statistics, as well as by personal accounts of parents, teachers, and students.

Although all of this information may alternately discourage or enrage readers, the author uses the last section of the book to give clear and practical options for educating children. Home schooling and Internet schools are explored with the same meticulous research that went into the first half of the book. Web sites and teaching materials are listed and critiqued. If anyone is seriously considering either of these educational options, the material presented here will provide a solid introduction.

The author unequivocally equips readers to understand and evaluate the education system, so they can make wise decisions about their children's futures. Misconceptions

It's ridiculous to think that this book or any others that criticize public schooling are saying that all people working and teaching in the system are bad. Everyone knows there are terrific, dedicated people working in the schools, indeed most of us know some people like that, but they are often hindered by the system and the rules. It's a perfectly legitimate question for discussion whether the 'system' is good, bad, broken, fixable, or should be abolished. John Taylor Gatto is one of those dedicated teachers who greatly deserved the teacher of the year awards he was given, and HE says public schools should be abolished. Indeed, he had success because he didn't conform and do what the 'system' said to.

I am a homeschooling mom of 8 who names all her kids after Bible names, but my main goal is a good education for my kids. With many American parents not sufficiently involved in their kids' lives, homeschooling is an awesome social trend that can only benefit the average family. I'm sure at least one of my kids didn't know much about the civil war at 12, but it's loving to learn, and having the tools of learning that counts. The 3 oldest have gone to college at 16 and done fine, and have been astounded at how much less history is known by the publicly- educated kids in their college classes. I was valedictorian from a private Christian school after attending public school as well, and now have been homeschooling and studying education for 20 years and am quite familiar with the issues and the lack of truly quality education in most public and private schools due to today's weak standards and time- wasting methods. If it's true that standardized tests with all their inherent faults are being dumbed down, how can it be exciting if test scores are up slightly? It just means the tests are easier and /or more kids are doing test prep. Yes some kids are learning much more math, but many are made to feel like failures and have no time to pursue their strengths, and all that math will help them little if they do not go into a math field and don't know enough history to be good citizens.

I have worked with people who are completely brainwashed with the liberal philosophy of government. They just look at you dazed and have no earthly idea why they believe what they do about political issues. They are not thinking liberals who came to their conclusions by thoughtful reasoning, they are statist parrots who have no idea why they think policy X is good and can't conceive of someone having an argument against it. If they had made up their own mind about things, you could have a real conversation with them about it, but they can't defend their ideas, they just assume the whole world agrees with them. Their public schools did not teach them logic, philosophy, how to debate, the constitution, or even the reasoning for their liberal views. That is what scares me. My kids know to test what they believe, how to defend their beliefs, and that truth is knowable and discoverable, and not different for every person.

Thank goodness we promote education for everyone now, including women and blacks, etc, but it is still legitimate to look at colonial education in terms of how well they managed to teach the ones they did choose to educate, compared to how well we do. If the public system does not usually have success with inner city kids and John Taylor Gatto does by ignoring the 'rules and proper methods of education' then maybe we should ignore them too. And regardless of how many wonderful Christians are in the public schools, there is much hostility toward Christianity in the school system. Court cases, NEA, ACLU, the absolute fits thrown if evolutionary assumptions are criticized, students forbidden to exercize their religion, etc. Christians suffer under a multitude of restrictions about what they can say and do while free sex is normalized and eastern meditation is actively taught and promoted. I personally was made fun of by the teachers in elementary public school 30+ years ago for bringing my Bible to school. It was something I wanted to do because of my own faith, not something I was told to do by parents or anyone else. Why did they think it was ok to ridicule a 5th grader about her Bible, when they were not nasty in general?

Many thinking people are totally for learning for everyone, but believe the public schools are more of a problem than a solution. It's a legitimate position that should be argued out. It's not good enough that a monolithic, mind-bogglingly expensive, government- controlled institution that is raising our kids for us does have some success sometimes. The question to ask is, Is it actually good for people? (I don't think any giant institutions ever are, whether religious, business, charitable, medical, educational, or governmental. They are all dehumanizing.) Are the successes truly because of the system or in spite of it? Are there any better and less expensive alternatives? Yes, private schools, charter schools,one room schools, internet classes, formal and informal tutoring-- whether by a trained teacher or anyone with knowledge to share. All run by the teachers and overseen by parents or guardians, and the learners themselves, not the government or the 'experts.' It would be great if all those truly wonderful teachers would quit and start small schools or tutoring businesses of their own instead of supporting the public school system. Local governments could give out vouchers for people below a certain income that were useable for any school or class including college, if we want to support education with tax money. It would be up to each parent and student to vote with their money for the good schools or teacher.

We should look at the big picture here and argue that, not just some of the details. And remember that questioning methods and institutions is not the same as indicting the motives of all the people involved. Even a failing teacher may be there because she cares about kids. But her love cannot change a damaging system that she has no contol over.

I do not know why Gaillard wrote this book, and I do not know why I read it (with pleasure). I guess the author wanted to stress the difficulties of breaking into an all-male enclave. I guess I wanted to learn something about the emergence of the Standard Model. I liked the book, although I may be biased by the fact that I am an academic, and the book is an odyssey of academic schmoozing.
I certainly did not have to be told about the male domination of academia forty years ago. In all my years as an undergrad at the University of Pennsylvania and the Sorbonne, and my graduate training in economics at Harvard, I never had a female instructor. The only books I read by women were in economic history and development economics. When I was a first-year Assistant Professor at Harvard, I received a letter inviting my wife to join the Harvard Wives Club. Needless to say, there was no Harvard Husbands club.
Gaillard (which means "hardy" in French) spends lots of time on her personal life, which is okay with me. She also talks a lot about faculty politics and how she was mistreated. Okay. But I don't know an academic who couldn't relate with relish stories of being mistreated. Really boring. Who cares?
I recommend this book because it found it fun reading, I did learn some history of science, and Gaillard is a pleasant writer with a sunny disposition.

Some modern atomic physics knowledge is helpful. I found the history of standard model physics presented at about the right physics level for me, a former high physics and chemistry teacher. The thread of chauvinism Gaillard presents throughout the book is enlightening, but also disturbing.
